Lac Bay Bonaire Windsurfing and More

Lac bay Bonaire windsurfing setting

Bonaire is a Caribbean island best known for scuba diving. If you aren’t a diver, you can always go snorkeling, they say. That’s not all! There are other outdoor activities you can enjoy in Bonaire, and one of the places to try watersports is Lac Bay. Here’s all you need to know about Lac Bay Bonaire windsurfing and more.

Windsurfing in Bonaire

Bonaire is one of the best places in the world to windsurf, mainly because of the consistency of the wind. The wind generally comes from the east, day after day. This is why you hear about people sailing to Bonaire from Antigua and not the opposite direction. The reliability of the wind, plus good weather, makes the island ideal for windsurfing and kiteboarding. As a result, many locals and vacationers participate in these sports, and Bonaire is known for creating champion windsurfers, who train in Lac Bay.

Drive over to the windward/eastern side of the island to the pleasantly protected Lac Bay. Once you see the windsurfers flying around the calm turquoise waters you will want to try. At least, that’s what happened to us. We drove over there one day while exploring the island and it looked so appealing, I signed up for a lesson! Lac Bay lagoon is the perfect place to learn with the wind coming in from the east, a reef protecting the bay from waves, and shallow warm water. Pretty as a postcard and ideal for windsurfing.

We used Jibe City for our windsurfing lessons, and they’ll rent you a board if you already know what you’re doing. I did a one-on-one introductory lesson and the teacher was excellent. He covered everything I needed to know and got me jibing.

Of course, I still spent a lot of time falling and pulling myself back up, but the water was so nice in Lac Bay I really didn’t mind it that much! I imagine it’s more fun once you’re good at it but the practice is good exercise and the surroundings are terrific.

Several windsurfing places operate out of Lac Bay, offering lessons and rentals. You can even stay in a hotel in the bay and devote your vacation to windsurfing.

What Else To Do at Lac Bay, Bonaire

Although windsurfing is the primary activity in Lac Bay, it’s not the only thing to do so you should still visit the lagoon even if you don’t want to windsurf.

Visit Lac Bay Bonaire because it’s a beautiful place with lovely protected waters. Plus, activities outside of windsurfing including paddling a SUP, renting a kayak and snorkeling. As the bay is very shallow and mostly sand, it’s not the best place for snorkeling if you want to see marine life, but it’s possible. The water is clear, calm and generally warm.

Jibe City includes a fun bar/restaurant with a great view of the action. It’s a good place to take a break from windsurfing, and watch and admire the champions at work.

Now I can say I have windsurfed where Bonaire’s champions train. I only tried it twice, and fell a lot, but had lots of fun doing it. Have you tried windsurfing, would you try it at Lac Bay or is there something else you would rather do in Bonaire? Let me know in the comments!
