One Day Off Wasn’t Enough

Remember we had a few troubles and needed a day off? It seems that wasn’t enough because the hits keep coming. Basically one day off wasn’t enough for us or Sava.

But first, our break!

We took Saturday afternoon to explore part of Long Island. The dinghy ride to the marina was short and slightly wet. Once there I had to dive into the water a few times to recover my hat and Brian’s sunglasses. Strong wind!

Our dinghy was running out of propane so we needed to get some. The propane supplier takes Saturdays off but said if we came to him he would fill our tank. He was a 25 minute drive away. We could take a taxi but it seemed worth it to rent a car.

Stuck on Stocking Island

The island to the east of George Town, Exumas is called Stocking Island. There are many beaches on this lovely island and lots of places to anchor nearby. For most of our time in the George Town area, we anchored Sava near, and got stuck on Stocking Island.

Since this is a big area for cruisers, we tried to participate as much as possible to meet other sailors and learn from them. We went to the places they go, tuned in to the net and went to events for cruisers.

The Daily Cruisers’ net

Every morning at 8am, we tune in to the George Town cruisers’ net on VHF 72. This 30 minute conversation is led by one volunteer sailor and all the other boaters participate.

Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park

Living and traveling on a sailboat means we don’t always have control over our time or our destinations. That’s how we ended up sailing the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park.

sailors rule: don’t make plans. they’ll change

We intended to head to Eleuthera after Nassau but the wind disagreed. When sailing, the wind wins most arguments. We wanted to leave on Tuesday and the wind forecast for the entire week was from the east. Eleuthera is due east, while the Exumas are southeast. Since we wanted to leave Nassau this week, we came to Exumas.

Our route

We spent one night anchored in Norman’s Cay, one night in Shroud Cay, followed by a night in Hawksbill Cay, and last night in Warderick Wells. The last three are part of the beautiful Exumas Cays Land and Sea Park, now one of my favorite parks in the world.
