A Week in Singapore

We’ve spent over a year in Australia, and are looking ahead to our next cruising destinations. Yet, we still have a lot of ground to travel in Australia to set ourselves up for that next jump. Once we got to Townsville, we decided to take a trip out of the country to reset our visas. We looked at flights from Townsville and chose to spend a week in Singapore.

Singapore Visa Run

This is not our first time making a visa run, leaving a country for a short time to extend our stay. To extend our Australian visa, we left our boat in the Townsville marina, as we did for last year’s visit to North America, and hopped a plane for Singapore.

Why We Chose Singapore

We explored all the international places we could fly to from Townsville. All options take several hours and two flights (from Townsville and then Brisbane). Even flying to Auckland was a 6 hour journey, plus we’ve already been there and it’s winter. We’ve had enough of winter. Singapore was close, warm, and a new destination. So we booked it.

Touring Townsville

We loved Townsville, in the northern part of Queensland, Australia. Having good friends who live there certainly helped us love this tropical town, but that wasn’t the only reason. Townsville has miles of cycling and walking trails, an excellent selection of bars and restaurants, art and museums! We spent a few weeks touring Townsville and have recommendations if you visit. If you’re sailing Australia’s east coast, it’s likely you will.

Where Is Townsville?

Townsville is as far north as we sailed in Australia before cyclone season. It’s located on the coast in northeastern Queensland, 900 miles north of Brisbane. With a population over 170,000, Townsville is the largest settlement in North Queensland. We found a lot to do and enjoyed our time touring Townsville.

When to Visit Townsville

As it is part of the tropical zone of Australia, Townsville’s climate is warm. We arrived in August, wintertime, the ideal season to visit Townsville. Days are warm in winter, but still comfortable, think low 20s C (70F). We left our boat there for our trip to North America and when we returned in October, springtime in Australia, the days were hot. It gets even hotter in summer into the mid 30sC (90F).

Hiking in New Zealand

They call it “tramping” here, but whatever you call it, hiking in New Zealand is a way of life. If you like to hike, New Zealand is paradise. It’s one of the best places we’ve been for hiking. Everywhere we visited on both North and South islands had nice hiking trails, thousands of them.

New Zealand Is a Hiking Paradise

One of our favorite ways to see a new place is by hiking. Especially after days on the boat, it’s a great way to stretch your legs and get fresh air. Sometimes you get to commune with local wildlife and people too!

Some of our favorite places for hiking are The Marquesas and Curaçao, thanks to a variety of beautiful trails. New Zealand hiking is even better for variety and quality. The sheer number of well laid out trails means you can pretty much go hiking anywhere. It’s practically impossible to get lost because they are so maintained and marked.

Brian and I marvel at the work that went into building these trails and then maintaining them. Someone has to bring loads of lumber into the forests to erect the stairs! Someone else carried in steel to build a bridge to cross the river. We are impressed at New Zealand’s trail infrastructure and reaped the benefits.

Add to that the lack of dangerous animals and a temperate climate, and hiking in New Zealand is nearly perfect.
