Bahamas Favorites

Last Friday we departed from the southeastern end of the beautiful islands of the Bahamas. After Long Island, we sailed to Crooked and Acklins Islands, followed by Mayaguana. From there, we tacked to the upper reaches of Turks and Caicos. We are no longer there but we will always remember our Bahamas favorites.

We spent more time in the Bahamas than expected, and we would have preferred a longer stay. There are still so many islands we didn’t visit. Here’s a look back on our favorite Bahamas memories.

My recommendation to you if you come here: get out of Nassau. If you have more than a weekend to spend, take a prop plane to any of the other small islands: the Berrys, Crooked Island, Compass Key for example. Enjoy the quiet and calm, the wildlife and the people. You will not be disappointed.

Swimming With Sharks and Pigs in Exumas

When we came to The Exumas, the swimming pigs was a goal. Swimming with sharks was an added bonus! Here’s what it’s like to go swimming with sharks and pigs in Exumas – not at the same time.

Compass Cay

Just a half day south of Warderick Wells is an adorable island called Compass Cay. The entire island is run by the marina, which rents out private cottages by the week and houses some pretty snazzy boats. We saw a boat with a waterslide!

Compass Cay Marina is also home to some friendly nurse sharks. We had to visit!

Diving Corn Island

We read in advance about the scuba diving in Corn Islands- big fish, uncluttered sites, nice reefs -and couldn’t wait to try it ourselves! We spent 5 days diving Corn Island, Nicaragua and this is what it was like.

Not A Great Start

It didn’t start out great – on Sunday and Monday,  the wind and waves were very strong – and even with Gravol, it was tough being on the boat. Below the surface, the waves affected visibility and moved us around a lot. But, we kept with it, and the last few days have been great!
