Before coming to Austria, and the Alps no less, I had imagined there would be good eats here. Fit for Alpine skiing, Austrian cuisine is hearty and delicious, and we’re trying to sample Austria’s best dishes. Plus, we can ski over to Switzerland and try their cuisine too! Good thing we are getting exercise skiing with all this good food. Here’s my guide to eating and drinking in Ischgl, Austria.
Christmas Dinner: Chinoise Fondue and Austrian Red Wine
I already mentioned our delicious first night’s dinner of fondue – which we ate at 6PM because we were so tired from all the travel LOL early bird special! The fondue came with totally unnecessary baked potatoes.
Mountain Lunch: Wurst and a beer
The food at the ski chalets on the mountains is very good – and reasonably priced. Fortunately, they don’t overcharge for sandwiches, soups and everything the way they do back home. A beer on the mountain is the same as a bar anywhere – between 3 and 5 euro. This meal was a very traditional Tyrolean lunch – we had to try the local specialties!
Mountain Lunch: Shnitzel and Goulash
The indoor lunchroom on the ski hill was too full so we ate our lunch outside in the sun. It was a little chilly but the delicious warm goulash and light and tasty schnitzel kept us comfortable.
Dinner in Ischgl at Plangger Weinlounge
Trip Advisor steered us to this quaint and delicious spot above a deli for dinner. Amazing meat and cheese plates and wine – plus a table by ourselves on the cozy top floor – made for a memorable meal.
Eating and Drinking in Ischgl – Austrian Restaurant
One night after apres ski we walked by a super cute looking Austrian restaurant with a great menu so we decided to go for dinner. If we had found Dorfcafe sooner, we probably would have gone back. The prices were amazing, food choices were excellent and they didn’t skimp on servings. No wonder it was so popular!
The Gasthaus Alt Paznaum Dorf Cafe was located on a side street in the basement of a hotel. The decor was fun and kitschy with all these gnomes or trolls placed around, and heads of various game animals on the walls. The servers were all dressed in lederhosen and dirndls which added to the cute factor. I tried goulash and spaetzle for the first time and they are delicious: I am going to try to make it at home.
Fondue in Switzerland
The best ever fondue I have had in my life was this week during our ski lunch break. WOW. The stuff we have at home just doesn’t compare. We over-ordered and got individual fondues when we should have shared one! Oh well! It made for motivation to ski really hard in the afternoon. We skied down into the Swiss town of Samnaun and walked around for a bit before we found the cutest place to have fondue. The restaurant, La Grotta, was decorated like you would expect a Swiss fondue place to look. It was perfect, and delicious, and so filling.
Apple Strudel with Vanilla Sauce
We saw so many people getting this on the slopes that on our last day, we had apple strudel and soup for lunch. And it was a very good choice. You absolutely have to get it with the vanilla sauce which they douse it in and it is really more of a custard than a sauce. Delicious!
Apres Ski: Gluhwein
I highly recommend the Austrian specialty drink popular this time of year. Glühwein is hot and delicious, and gives me a proper buzz. I’ll have another of those, I’m sure. Prost!
They Sell Aperol Spritz in Grocery Stores
I am close to heaven. The chocolate and cheese in the grocery stores is good – and cheap! But, even better, they sell Aperol Spritz in bottles in the grocery store. Wish I could bring it all home. It’s only $3.99 for 4 bottles!
So, good thing we were skiing because the food choices were limitless and delicious. I didn’t even show you everything we ate and drank because that would be overshare, but now you know where to go and what to get when eating and drinking in Ischgl.
