Grenada is a popular spot this time of year. Countless Caribbean cruisers spend hurricane season among the many sheltered bays on the southern shores of the island. This many cruisers together in one spot for extended periods means lots of opportunities for fun, and it’s always fun at Camp Grenada.
Yesterday, we already renewed our monthly cruising permit and we can hardly believe how fast the time has flown, how many cruisers we’ve met and how much fun we’ve had here.
Camp Grenada
Adult summer camp. That is what the cruiser experience is like here. Every day and night there are multiple activities for cruisers to enjoy. Many are free or for a small fee, and range from movies to dominoes to volleyball and shopping buses.
Every morning except Sunday, we tune in to channel 66 on the boat VHF for “Cruisers Net.” Cruisers net is not unique to Grenada, but this one is the biggest we’ve heard in our limited time as cruisers.
The net is an amazing wealth of information about what to do and how to do it in Grenada. The social activities alone take up about 10 minutes each day. And since this post is about fun, I am going to take you through some of the most fun activities of our first month in Camp Grenada.
We’ve been moving around the anchorages to try all the different activities and explore what each bay has to offer.
The Hash
Every Saturday, somewhere in Grenada, for a very small fee, you can run or walk with the Hash House Harriers. It’s hot, you’ll sweat, and you will most likely get muddy and/or wet, but it’s so much fun. The views and countryside are beautiful too!
Each hash is different and the day’s course is a mystery. You have to follow a trail left by “the hare” made of bits of white paper. The routes seem to vary from about 5-8KM but I have never done the course perfectly.
It is very easy to get lost or miss part of the trail or do the running route when you mean to take the shorter one for walking. I have made all of these mistakes in just two hashes.
The routes go up lots of hills, as Grenada is very hilly, and through the bush. We have crossed many rivers and streams and gotten muddy and wet. It’s a fun time, people of all ages participate, locals, cruisers, even if you are visiting Grenada for a week or two, everybody is welcome.
Virgin hashers – those who have done it for the first time – get to take part in an initiation ceremony at the end of the day. Spoiler alert: it involves beer.
Music Jams
Performers and music fans alike are happy to attend the multiple music sessions here in Grenada.
So far, we’ve attended and Brian’s played at the Tuesday open mic at Taffy’s Bar, the Wednesday cruisers jam at Secret Harbor Marina and the Thursday night jam session at Nimrod’s Rum Shop.
We still have to go to the jams at Hog Island and the brewery. Lots of good quality musicians play in Grenada and Brian loves the opportunity to practice and perform.
Gearing Up For Carnival
Carnival in Grenada is huge, so big they call it “Spicemas” because it ranks with Christmas as a national holiday and Grenada is the Spice Island.
We are ready for Carnival! We are marching with the Carib band and have all of our materials for the big parade on Monday night.
In advance of Spicemas, we went to a steel band practice and even got to try playing ourselves!
This is only a small amount of what we have done in our first month! I’ll send more updates of fun at Camp Grenada as we are going to be here enjoying ourselves for a while.
