Boating Around The Berry Islands

We’ve been in The Bahamas over a week and most of it has been spent enjoying the beautiful weather and clear waters boating the Berry Islands.

Great Harbor Cay

Though adjacent to a cruise line-owned island and home to an airport, Great Harbor Cay feels remote. A great introduction to the Berry Islands for us, we spent 3 nights anchored here. The island is occupied by only 350 or so people, and all of those we interacted with were warm and open; two different people gave us rides. We spent an afternoon traversing the island and the town of Bullocks Harbor by foot, visiting a couple of restaurants, a stunning beach, the marina, and the grocery store.

Take a Trip to The Everglades

Sava is out of the water or “on the hard” in boat jargon. We’re living on her while she is on land getting her hull painted. So while we are on dry land, we’ve rented cars and explored southern Florida. The latest was a trip to the Everglades.

About The Everglades

Wow. I can’t believe we waited to visit this amazing park. The Everglades is a national park, which is fortunately still open despite the government shutdown. It is a huge park, covering 1.5 million acres of the tip of southern mainland Florida. The Everglades’ marshes, mangroves, and flatlands are home to many different species, common and endangered. If you want to see crocs and gators, turtles and birds in Florida, this is a good place to go! It’s possible to see manatees but better to go to the best places to see wild manatees in Florida.

Our First Sail On Sava

Our insurance broker said we needed an assessment by a captain to get insurance. We took that as an opportunity to learn from one of the best. So that’s what we did. We hired a captain and went out for our first sail on Sava.

Captain on Board

Yesterday we were fortunate to have a wise and helpful captain  on board Sava for our first day sailing her as owners. Conrad hails from New Zealand and has lived and worked in Florida for decades and has lots of stories from his many years sailing. We soaked up as much information from him as we could.
